Happy 90th Birthday to Lysaght Manufacturing in Australia.
One of Australia’s longest-established and most respected brands is celebrating its 90th anniversary as a local manufacturer this year, 2011.
John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd was founded in 1918 to better serve the Australian building and construction industry with its imports of galvanised steel from Lysaght’s English factories, which were already established in the market as high-quality coated steel building products.
With imports becoming dramatically difficult during the First World War, John Lysaght (Australia) established sheet steel rolling and galvanising works, which opened in Newcastle, NSW, in April 1921.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, the local Lysaght company took on an important role for both Britain and Australia. Two of its many major contributions were the supply of curved corrugated steel, which was exported to make more than 25,000 backyard bomb shelters for Londoners during the Blitz, and the manufacture of the Australian-designed Owen Machine Gun, of which 45000 were made.
Lysaght products can be found on many steel sheds and aussie homes today.
Happy 90th Birthday, Aussie-made Corrugated Iron.
