As time passes, most homeowners find themselves in a situation in which they enjoy their homes, like their communities, but wish they had a bit more living space. Luckily, you do not have to move to a new home to achieve this dream. Continue reading to learn how you can make it happen.

Add a Shed Home on Your Property

One of the best ways to create more space on your property is to add a shed. Place it in the backyard away from your home for privacy for the occupants of the main home and the new shed home. This way, it is conveniently located on-site, but separate from your home, so everyone can have the space they need.

Create the interior of the new shed home just as you would any other home. Add a well-appointed small kitchen with marble slabs on the island and surrounding countertops. Incorporate smart features, such as lighting, thermostats, and a security system. Opt for bright paint colours, such as soft whites, to create the feel of a larger space and allow the natural light to bounce off the walls.

Set up the shed just as you would with any other home. Add all of the amenities, such as heating, air conditioning, sewer lines, water, and electricity. Focus on making it a comfortable and inviting space by looking for furniture that fits the size, instead of bringing unwanted furniture from your home that is too big for the space.

Add a Living Area Above the Garage

Garages are the unsung heroes of the home. They house all manner of things. Everything from your vehicles, bicycles, sports gear, lawn care items, and extra boxes, etc., all find a place to live in the humble garage. But what about making more out of it than just a place to store things?

If you have a garage with an elevated ceiling or one with storage space near the roof, you might have the perfect starting point to expand upon. Otherwise, if your garage is offset from the rest of your home with nothing built above it, you have a different type of opportunity for home growth. Either way, the end goal is to build up from your garage’s current footprint.

Hire a professional builder and contractor to raise the roof and add a second floor above the garage. Have everything set up just as you would a regular home. You will need water, sewer, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and good insulation. Your contractor will need to ensure that the ventilation is top-notch so any lingering carbon monoxide from the vehicles below in the garage vents outward instead of upward.

Finally, consider whether you will add entry points from the garage’s interior, a new exterior stairway and door, or an access point directly from inside the house. What you will end up with is a nice living space that can house a college student, grandparents, or a series of houseguests.

Create more space in your home and on your property so you can live without feeling cramped. Avoid unnecessary frustrations when you have short-term or long-term guests and ensure everyone has the privacy they need to remain comfortable and happy.
