4 Design Tips for a Stunning and Useful Balcony
A balcony can be a great addition to any home. If you live in a city apartment that doesn’t have a lot (if any) exterior space, your balcony can bring some light and fresh air into your home, as well as give you a chance to sit outside and look at the views. Or if you’re in a house outside of the city center, a balcony can still give you a convenient place to eat your breakfast, grow some plants, and just relax in a place that’s truly yours.
But, just like any part of your home, a balcony can only give you what you put into it. If you neglect and ignore your balcony, it won’t be a place where you want to spend time. Here are some tips to help you design and decorate your balcony.
1. Railings and Balustrades
One of the most important features of a balcony is that it needs to be safe. You should check that it’s structurally sound, but the most common safety feature that every balcony needs is some form of railing to protect people from falls.
There are loads of different types of railings, which give you plenty of options for personalizing your balcony. For example, if you want a modern look and an unobstructed view outside your balcony, you can’t go wrong with a glass balustrade. This is a safe, attractive option that can work well with any balcony. But you can also choose more traditional styles of railing, as long as it’s secure.
2. Balcony Furniture
If your balcony is large enough to sit out on, it’s a good idea to invest in furniture that goes well with the rest of your design. Even a small chair or bench is better than nothing, and it makes it so you can sit outside and enjoy your morning coffee or whatever else you want.
Folding furniture can work great for a balcony, as it’s easy to store and put away in poor weather, or you can choose weather-resistant metal furniture. In this case, keep some cushions handy so you can sit out more comfortably. If you have a bit more room, add a small seating area on your balcony or even a sun lounger.
3. Lighting For Your Balcony
You can also add some exterior lighting and heating to your balcony, which is perfect for the slightly cooler evenings, so you can still sit out comfortably. Choose outdoor lighting and heating devices that don’t need to be plugged in, so you don’t have to worry about tripping over wires trailing into your home.

Your balcony is the perfect place to add some potted plants. Fragrant flowers and herbs grow brilliantly in pots and can turn your balcony into a sensory oasis. Even better, with herbs and other small, edible plants, you can add some extra flavor to whatever you cook. This adds another use for your balcony, and makes it an even nicer place to spend your time.
