The gate itself is only part of the equation. Posts, hinges, latches, ground clearance and material selection all influence how well it operates and how long it lasts.
Before starting your next gate project, here are some practical considerations worth working through.
Start With How the Gate Will Be Used
Before buying timber, steel or hardware, consider what the gate actually needs to do.
A small pedestrian gate beside a shed has very different requirements from a wide driveway gate. Likewise, a gate that is opened several times every day needs to withstand more wear than one providing occasional access to a side yard.
Consider the width of the opening, expected gate weight and how frequently it will be used. If vehicles, trailers, caravans or machinery need to pass through, make sure there is enough clearance to comfortably manoeuvre through the opening.
Planning these details before construction can prevent costly modifications later.
Don't Underestimate the Importance of the Posts
A gate can only remain properly aligned if its supporting structure is solid.
One of the most common problems with older gates is sagging. While the gate frame sometimes contributes, movement in the supporting post can also cause the gate to drop or become difficult to close.

Think About Ground Clearance

Get the Frame Square Before Installation
A surprisingly small alignment error during construction can become much more noticeable once a gate is hanging.
Measure diagonally across the gate frame in both directions before finalising the assembly. Matching diagonal measurements indicate that the frame is square.
Bracing is equally important, particularly with larger gates. Without adequate support, a rectangular frame can gradually distort under its own weight.
Taking extra time during construction can make installation considerably easier.
Plan the Latch Position Early
The latch shouldn't be an afterthought.
Its location can influence the gate frame design, closing position and even the placement of surrounding posts. Decide how the gate will be secured before construction is complete.
For gates used around sheds and garages, consider whether you need simple everyday access, child-resistant operation or the ability to secure the gate with a lock.
A gate that closes cleanly and consistently will also place less stress on the latch hardware.
Check and Maintain the Gate Over Time
Even a properly built gate benefits from occasional maintenance.
Every few months, inspect the hardware for loose fasteners, corrosion or unusual movement. Check that the gate remains aligned with the latch and isn't beginning to drag against the ground.
Timber gates may also require periodic refinishing, while metal gates should be checked for damaged coatings or areas where corrosion has started.
Catching small issues early can prevent them from becoming larger repairs.
